For years, Pope Francis has wanted to travel to South Sudan, the youngest country in the world. However, the East African country has long been stuck in a civil war since gaining independence in 2011.
Violence continues to this day in parts of the country. The Pope's trip to South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo was already planned last July, but had to be canceled at short notice due to health problems of the then 85-year-old Francis.
Now the head of the Catholic Church is catching up on his "Peace Pilgrimage" along with Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury and head of the Anglican Church, and Iain Greenshields, current leader of the Calvinist Church of Scotland. The three faiths are also represented in South Sudan, where the majority of the eleven million inhabitants follow Christianity
